Vilage Automomy Under the Cholas

Village assembliies played a remarkeble role in the administration of south indian kingdoms. the chola local self government and village assemblies deserv special mention in this context. two importent chola inscriptions obtained from Uttaramerur throw light on the constitution and working of the village assemblies.There where two kinds of village assemblies the Ur and the Mahasaba. Ur was the assembly of the commen people while mahasaba was the assembly of the brahmins. mahasaba played an importend role in the administration of the village.
